Downloading NVDA screen reader and MathPlayer
The combination of the NVDA scren reader and MathPlayer allow for students who need a screen reading aid to have math equations read to them as part of the screen reader's functions. Here's how to obtain NVDA and MathPlayer as well as make them work together.
Installing NVDA
- Go to the NV Access website located at https://www.nvaccess.org/download/
- Click the large orange Download button in the center of the page (you may have to scroll down)
- If asked what to do with the file choose Save File
- Once the installer is downloaded, navigate to it's location and double click it to run (you will need admin rights if you are on a computer you don't own)
- NVDA will begin narrating it's own install. Follow it's directions to completion.
Installing MathPlayer
- Go to Design Science website at https://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathplayer/download.htm?src=mplogo?src=mplogo
- In the middle of the screen find the link Download MathPlayer 4 (5.4 mb) and click it
- If asked what to do with the file choose Save File
- Once the installer is downloaded, navigate to it's location and double click it to run (you will need admin rights if you are on a computer you don't own)
- Follow the prompts to complete installation
Making MathPlayer and NVDA work together
- You need to have both NVDA and MathPlayer installed (see above) and we suggest starting with NVDA
- With NVDA running press Ctrl+Alt+M on your keyboard
- You should hear NVDA say MathML provider changed to MathPlayer
