Remote desktop allows users to connect to a computer in another location and act as if the computer were local.

Finding Remote Desktop

  1. On Windows Remote Desktop Top (RDP) is a standard component. You do not need to install it, just follow the directions under Using Remote Desktop on Windows.
  2. On Mac Microsoft Remote Desktop can be found in the App Store for FREE. Follow the directions under Using Remote Desktop on Mac.

Using Remote Desktop on Windows

  1. Click the Start button. In the search box, type Remote Desktop

  2. In the Computer box, type the name of the computer (if VPN is connected) or IP address of the remote computer you would like to connect to.

  3. If you get Certificate prompt, select Yes
  4. When entering your credentials, you want to select Use another account and type:
    • Username: Network\username
    • Password: your password

  5. Click OK

If You Have Multiple Monitors

If you have two or more monitors on both the computer you are remoting to and remoting from you can use all of them by doing the following.

  1. In the Remote Desktop Connection popup select Show Options

  2. Go to the Display tab
  3. Check the box for Use all my monitors for the remote session

Using Remote Desktop on Mac

Note: You need to have Local Admin Access on your Mac and you will need your Apple ID to sign into the App Store.

  1. Go to the App Store and search for Microsoft Remote Desktop
  2. Click the button that reads Get

    1. If necessary log into the App Store with your Apple ID
  3. The Get Button will change to a green Install button, click it
  4. After the app downloads it should open automatically, if not click the Open button or launch Microsoft Remote Desktop from Applications
  5. Microsoft Remote Desktop will open a blank window.
  6. Click the + (plus sign) in the upper menu bar

  7. Select Add PC
  8. Enter the name of the computer you wish to connect to in PC Name
    1. Every computer's name should be on a sticker with the Bay College logo and the IT Help Desk phone number on it
    2. If you are having trouble locating the computer name contact the IT Help Desk

  9. Click Add
  10. Back in the main window you will see a box representing the computer, double click it
  11. Enter your Bay College Username and Password

    1. Format your Username as network\<Insert your Username>, for example: network\bob.smith
  12. Click Continue
  13. Your remote session will open in full screen mode. Moving the mouse cursor towards the top of the screen will reveal the menu bar when needed.

If You Have Multiple Monitors

If you have two or more monitors on both the computer you are remoting to and remoting from you can use all of them by doing the following.

  1. In the Microsoft Remote Desktop App hover over the computer you are connecting to
  2. Select the Edit (pencil icon)

  4. Check the box for Use all monitors
